Rebel Wolves announced Update 1.1 on October 16, 2026, and it is the largest patch the studio has shipped since launch. The headline is not a balance change or a performance patch — it is the first system the game never had: a way to unlearn your abilities without starting over.
The patch is confirmed for the week of October 19, 2026. Rebel Wolves has not published an exact hour, has not said whether it requires a client restart, and has published only a feature list rather than a full numbered changelog. The 1,100+ line items are promised as a launch-day release, not as anything readable today.
What Is Actually Confirmed
The announcement lists four new features and a set of changes. This is the studio’s own wording, translated from the October 16 post.
New Features
| Feature | What the studio says |
|---|---|
| Draught of Mind Rebirth | “Free your mind with the Draught of Mind Rebirth. Forget all your Swordmastery, Witchcraft, and Vampirism abilities, and use the time you spent learning them to master a different set of abilities.” |
| Petting animals | “What happens when you merge a directional combat system with an ability to pet dogs and cats? Directional. Animal. Petting.” |
| Updated Story mode | “Pick between the Forgiving game difficulty (previously called Story) and a new Story mode with additional combat assist.” |
| Additional subtitle settings | An option to increase subtitle font size, and an option to enable subtitles for all dialogue lines. |
Changes and Improvements
- FrameGen update — updated frame-generation technology plus a dedicated FrameGen settings menu.
- Camera — adjusted combat animations and camera movements.
- Combat — improved enemy targeting, and improved locking onto and disengaging from enemies.
- Traversal — improved responsiveness of targeting and attaching to surfaces when using Shadowstep and Planeshift.
- Japanese version — blood and gore are no longer censored in the Japanese Steam build.
- 1,100+ additional improvements and fixes.
The Respec Is the Big One, and the Reason Is the Timer
The Draught of Mind Rebirth matters more than a typical respec because of how this game spends time. Learning abilities in Dawnwalker costs in-game days, and in-game days come out of a 30-day budget that covers the entire campaign. That has made every ability pick effectively permanent: a single early commitment can strand a save with a weak build and no way to recover the days.
Two outlets report that the draught returns the time spent learning the abilities. TechPowerUp and TweakTown both describe it that way, and both tie it explicitly to the 30-day limit. This is the single most consequential detail in the announcement, and it is also the least precisely sourced — the studio’s own text says “use the time you spent learning them,” which is the phrasing those outlets are reading as a refund. We could not confirm the refund against a primary source, and the studio has not said how you obtain the draught or what it costs. Treat it as a strong secondary-source reading, not a guarantee.
Until that is settled, the practical advice is the same one the 30-day time mechanic guide gives: if you are on a first playthrough and have spread points across more than one skill tree, 1.1 may be the patch that makes an unspent pool recoverable instead of wasted.
Difficulty: Four Tiers Become Five, and the Rename Is Confirmed
The fifth tier promised since September is real, and its details are now firm where the October Patch Preview had to hedge.
The important correction: the renamed tier is called Forgiving, not Demanding. When game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz described the rename to Eurogamer in September, he floated “Demanding or something like this” as an offhand working name. The shipped name in the 1.1 feature list is Forgiving. Our difficulty guide carried the tentative name until now.
| Tier before 1.1 | Tier after 1.1 |
|---|---|
| Story (easiest) | Story (new, with additional combat assist) |
| — | Forgiving (the current Story mode, renamed) |
| Fair | Fair |
| Challenging | Challenging |
| Duelist (hardest) | Duelist (hardest) |
The new Story tier is described as having additional combat assist — which is more concrete than the September wording, where the director said only that it was for people who “don’t want to experience the combat.” Whether that assist is an auto-block, damage reduction, or something else is not stated. The top of the list does not move: Duelist remains the hardest.
Because the new tier takes the Story label, a save started under the old Story setting should be checked on patch day rather than assumed to be unchanged.
What the September Promises Did and Did Not Deliver
The October Patch Preview tracked a September interview with Tomaszkiewicz. Comparing that against today’s feature list:
Confirmed in the announcement. Enemy targeting and lock-on/disengage behavior are both being improved, which matches the September promise on the criticized stun target-switching. Shadowstep and Planeshift responsiveness is explicitly on the list, matching the navigation-mesh escape fix.
Not mentioned in the announcement. The specific three-hits-to-break-stun formula the director described in September does not appear in the 1.1 feature list, and neither does the removal of forced target-switching stated in those terms. The combat bullet is written broadly enough to cover either. We are not claiming the stun rework shipped or did not ship — the full changelog is the only way to settle it, and the studio has promised it for launch day.
Still absent. Enemy health tuning and any change to the 30-day timer are both still off the table, and New Game Plus remains unannounced.
Accessibility and PC Notes
The subtitle changes are the least discussed part of the patch and arguably the most requested. Two of the most common post-launch complaints were unreadable subtitle sizing and dialogue that was not subtitled at all; both get a dedicated toggle in 1.1.
The dedicated FrameGen settings menu is a genuine PC-side addition rather than a bug fix, and it arrives in the same window as Nvidia’s DLSS 5 rollout. That is worth watching if you are on PC, but note the standing caveat: Tomaszkiewicz has said PC optimization work is ongoing without promising any single patch resolves the shader-compilation stutter documented in Launch Day Known Issues. Do not read 1.1 as the fix for that.
The Japanese Steam build also loses its blood and gore censorship in this patch.
What to Watch on Patch Day
- The exact release hour, and whether it requires a client restart.
- The full 1,100-item changelog — the feature list is not the changelog.
- How the Draught of Mind Rebirth is obtained and whether the time cost is genuinely refunded. This is the question that determines whether respecs are cheap or merely possible.
- What “additional combat assist” actually does on the new Story tier.
- Whether the stun three-hits formula is in the changelog.
- Whether existing Story saves are migrated or need a new game.
