The Court System Explained: How 41 Activities Unlock Brencis

The Court system gates every quest-led ending: 41 activities split across three Boyars fill an Anger meter that unlocks Brencis. Plan Ambrus first.

The Court is the engine between the prologue and the Brencis fight. The Blood of Dawnwalker does not let you walk straight up to Greifberg Castle and challenge the vampire lord. Instead, the campaign forces you through three Boyars — Ambrus, Xanthe, and Bakir — by way of an Anger meter that fills as you dismantle each one’s territory. Complete enough Court Activities, and each Boyar’s boss fight unlocks. Beat all three, and Brencis becomes reachable.

That is the Court system in one sentence. The rest of this page is the structure underneath it.

What The Court Actually Is

The Court is Brencis’s decision-making body inside Vale Sangora. The Boyars administer his territory while he holds court at Greifberg Castle. Mechanically, the Court screen in-game tracks each Boyar’s Anger Level, which rises as Coen disrupts activities tied to that Boyar’s region. The activities are not on the map by default — they appear as generic question marks until Coen gets close enough for the game to reveal which Boyar owns the site.

This is a deliberate design choice. Rebel Wolves wants scouting to matter. If you run past a camp without investigating, the Court does not record the activity, and your Anger Level for that Boyar does not move. The system rewards route knowledge, which is why the First 30 Days: A Survival Guide for New Dawnwalkers frames the first campaign rule as “explore first, commit second.”

The Three Boyars And Their Territories

BoyarRegionCourt ActivitiesCourt Role
AmbrusNorth14Runs the human-blood supply chain — prisons, transports, storage for Brencis and the other Vrakhir allies
XantheSoutheast15Less logistics, more power — Blood Guard recruitment, experiments, deeper lore of the valley
BakirSouthwest12Holds the local population in line — rewards loyalists, punishes resisters

The split is 14/15/12 (totaling 41) per PowerPyx’s launch-week location list. Ambrus leads in count because his dungeon and transport chain runs are the most geographically spread. Xanthe’s 15 reflects the Blood Guard recruiter camps inside and around Svartrau. Bakir’s 12 is the smallest because his territory is the most compact.

The Anger Meter, In Practice

Each Boyar has a profile screen with an icon. The same icon appears at the activity site once Coen discovers it — until then it shows as a generic quest marker or question mark. Completing the activity raises the Anger Level by one tick. Hitting the maximum for a Boyar unlocks the boss-fight quest for that Boyar.

There are two practical details to know:

  • Activities are not region-locked in the strict sense. Any Court Activity you complete raises its owning Boyar’s Anger. Activities tied to Ambrus that physically sit in Svartrau still count toward Ambrus, not Xanthe. The region framing is flavor; the Anger math is by ownership.
  • The 75% completion rule. BackyardDrunkard’s Court strategy guide argues that you need roughly 75% of one Boyar’s activities cleared before the Anger bar reliably unlocks the boss quest. Going in below the threshold wastes time segments on low-impact activity. This is community-consensus, not a developer-confirmed number.

Activity Types

The 41 activities fall into four functional categories. The labels below are our taxonomy for the wiki, mapped against AltChar’s behavior descriptions and PowerPyx’s per-activity walkthroughs.

Activity TypeWhat Coen DoesExample Activity
Combat campsClear guards protecting a Boyar’s operationAmbrus’s Dungeons: Judge and Executioner
Blood CellarsRaid storage sites for Brencis’s forcesXanthe’s Blood Cellars (Phial of Ambrus’s Blood as loot)
TransportsIntercept shipments of blood or artefacts on the roadXanthe’s Transports: When Two Dogs…
Political / rescueFree prisoners, sabotage distilleries, gather evidenceBakir’s Pillory prisoners, Xanthe’s Recruiters camps

Every Court Activity advances in-game time — typically by 3 time segments per activity. With 41 activities at that cost, you are spending roughly 123 time segments on Court work. The campaign only has 480 total segments (16 segments/day × 30 days), so the Court alone consumes about a quarter of the entire clock. This is why The 30-Day Time Mechanic Explained reads the Court as the central pressure of the campaign: most of your time segments will go here.

ConsolePulse’s recommended quest order is the one most launch-week guides converged on, and it maps onto the campaign design cleanly:

  1. Ambrus first. He has 14 activities, but his territory in the north is closest to the Laslea prologue exit, so you lose less travel time on the early routes. His dungeons double as free loot from freed prisoners (revisitable after a day for additional dialogue).
  2. Bakir second. 12 activities, all in the southwest. Bakir’s villages route into the Elder / Osha quest chain (“The Heart Wants What It Wants”), which closes several side paths and unlocks a reward item useful for the Bakir boss fight.
  3. Xanthe last. 15 activities, mostly clustered in and around Svartrau City. Xanthe is the closest Boyar to Greifberg Castle, so finishing her last means you finish right at the doorstep of the Brencis finale. Xanthe’s Recruiters camps inside the city are also where you can pick up legendary loot (the Phial of Brencis’s Blood, Phial of Ambrus’s Blood, Phial of Bakir’s Blood) by stealing vrakhiri blood from the gold boxes.

This ordering is not mandatory. The campaign does not lock you into any route. But it minimizes backtracking, and it lets you progress into Svartrau’s harder content with two Boyar boss fights already banked.

Court Activities, Anger, And Infamy — What Is The Difference

The Court is sometimes confused with the Infamy system, but they track different things.

  • Anger is per-Boyar. It fills as you dismantle Court Activities in that Boyar’s territory. Anger is the unlock gate for the Boyar boss fight.
  • Infamy is global. It tracks how openly Coen behaves as a predator — public violence, feeding incidents, sloppy night play. High Infamy triggers curfews and bounty hunters; very high Infamy unlocks the resistance faction.

The two can interact — running the Court at night raises Infamy, while running it by day keeps Infamy low — but they are not the same meter and they do not share a threshold. Both feeds are tracked separately on the in-game UI.

Edicts And The Court

The Court also issues Edicts — small systemic changes to how Vale Sangora behaves during the campaign. Edicts are not the same as Activities, and the community is still working through the full list. What is confirmed: Edicts apply modifiers to combat, traversal, or vendor pricing across the entire region, and they cycle as the campaign progresses. The wiki will track confirmed Edicts as the regions index expands.

Honest Gaps

  • The 41-activity count is community-confirmed, not dev-stated. PowerPyx’s location list is the most thorough launch-week inventory; BackyardDrunkard and AltChar both reference the same total. Rebel Wolves has not published a master activity list, so any future patch could add or remove activities and shift the count.
  • The 14/12/15 split is community-observed. Some launch-week guides (notably thebloodofdawnwalkers.wiki) cite slightly different distributions based on whether they count secret activities or not. We publish the PowerPyx numbers with the caveat that one or two activities may have moved between regions.
  • The 75% Anger rule is community-recommended. No dev quote confirms the threshold. BackyardDrunkard argues for it from gameplay testing, not from Rebel Wolves commentary.
  • Edict roster is incomplete. The wiki will expand this section as datamined and dev-confirmed Edicts become available.
