Wisp Treasure Hunt: Watermill Hills — Hidden Quest in Briar Sloughs, Frugal Witchcraft Manual

Hidden wisp treasure hunt in Briar Sloughs (Watermill Hills) — auto-trigger quest, follow red wisps west of Sloughside Mill Shrine, kill the Ravenous Bear, open the chest for 100 XP + 1 Skill Point + Frugal Witchcraft Manual. 1-hour time cost, beginner-friendly.

Wisp Treasure Hunt: Watermill Hills is one of two hidden exploration quests in the launch build that trigger automatically when you walk into the right area — no NPC, no map marker, no quest log entry until you are already in it. The other is Wisp Treasure Hunt: South Foot. Both lead to a small but high-value reward: a Skill Point, XP, and a Witchcraft skill manual that would otherwise cost segments and gold to find in a vendor.

This page covers Watermill Hills specifically. South Foot is structurally identical but lives in a different region — the wisp pattern is the launch build’s signature “secret side content” template.

Step 1: Fast Travel To Sloughside Mill Shrine

The closest fast-travel node is Sloughside Mill Shrine in the Briar Sloughs region. Most players will have this shrine unlocked already because it sits along the rebel-aligned objective chain in Briar Sloughs. If you have not unlocked it, the secondary option is the Marshes Scouting Tower to the east.

From the shrine, head west and walk up the slope. The wisps are located just north of Briar Sloughs in the hills above the watermill area.

Step 2: Spot The Red Wisps

The wisps appear as bright red glowing lights. At night, they are extremely visible — they look like floating red lanterns drifting through the hills. During the day they are still visible but less dramatic.

You do not need to interact with them. Walking close to them is enough to trigger the quest. No dialogue plays — Coen just notices the strange lights and decides to follow them.

Step 3: Follow The Trail Southwest

Once triggered, the wisps lead you along a path. Three rules:

  • Do not shortcut through the forest. The path is narrower than it looks, and side paths through the trees lead nowhere.
  • The wisps wait if you fall behind. They move at a pace you can match on foot without rushing.
  • Watch for where they hover and pause. They stop briefly at decision points (cliff edges, forks in the path) to give you a moment to orient.

The first leg of the path leads southwest toward a cliff. Follow it down toward the rocky area.

Step 4: Fight The Ravenous Bear

At the bottom of the southwestern path is a dead end — and a Ravenous Bear blocking the way to the chest. This is a mandatory fight, the bear does not move or despawn. The bear has three health bars and cannot be skipped or avoided.

The launch build’s tested strategy (GamingPromax):

  • Use directional blocks to conserve stamina. The Bear’s attacks have a slow wind-up that lets you Perfect Block reliably.
  • Dodge all red glowing attacks. These cannot be blocked and will knock Coen down.
  • Use Blood Boil or Dirty Trick (if unlocked) to apply a stagger before committing to a full melee rotation.
  • Bring at least 2 healing consumables. The fight lasts about 90 seconds with proper play, but if you miss the timing on a heavy attack you can lose 50% HP in one hit.

After the bear dies, the wisps return and wait nearby for you.

Step 5: Follow The Wisps Uphill To The Chest

After the bear, the wisps lead you up a hill to the northwest. The path goes upward before shifting direction. Stay close to the wisps — the path is not obvious from a map view.

From the top of the hill, the wisps guide you east and then downhill. At the end of this path, you find a cluster of dead bodies and the Watermill Hills treasure chest nearby. The scene has a grim, abandoned look — whoever was here before did not make it out.

Step 6: Open The Chest (1 Hour)

Interacting with the chest opens it, but opening costs 1 in-game hour. In The Blood of Dawnwalker, time is a precious resource, and every hour spent doing something is an hour not spent saving your family. The 1-hour cost is the only time penalty for the entire quest.

The chest contains:

  • 100 XP
  • 1 Skill Point
  • Frugal Witchcraft Manual (the key reward — see below)
  • Random loot (consumables, common materials)

The bear also drops meat, liver, and bones as crafting materials.

Why This Quest Is Worth Doing

Two reasons, both decision-driven:

  • Frugal Witchcraft is a high-priority perk. It restores health when you kill an enemy with a Witchcraft ability, which offsets the health cost of casting spells. It is one of the top three Witchcraft perks recommended in the launch build’s perk guides.
  • The quest is essentially free. 1 in-game hour is the entire cost. There is no NPC to find, no quest trigger to wait for, and the wisp path is short. If you are anywhere near Briar Sloughs anyway, the detour is minimal.

For Witchcraft-focused players, Frugal Witchcraft alone justifies the detour. For Swordmastery/Vampirism-focused players, the 1 Skill Point + 100 XP + bear loot is still worth the 1-hour cost.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to fight the bear from the cliff above. The terrain advantage is not real — the bear aggros through walls and one-shot punishes archers who try to play safe.
  • Forgetting the chest costs 1 hour. Some players run past the chest thinking the wisps were the reward. They were not — the chest is the actual reward, and it costs clock to open.
  • Doing the quest during the day before unlocking Mercurial Fervour. Daytime sprint is much faster than walking, and the Briar Sloughs hills are not small. Bring Mercurial Fervour or Shapeshift for the traversal.
  • Ignoring the quest because it is “hidden.” The wisp quest pattern is the launch build’s signature hidden content. If you see red wisps anywhere in the game, follow them — there are only a handful of wisp quests, and each one has a free Skill Point or skill manual.
