PC Full-Screen Flicker Fix — NVIDIA Driver 610.88 + Better Reflections Mod

Community-discovered fix for the day-1 full-screen flickering / shimmering bug on reflective surfaces (blood pools, armor). Roll NVIDIA driver back to 610.88, install Better Reflections mod, force DLSS preset F. Plus the single-setting alternative (start on High, switch to Ultra).

The day-1 launch build has a recurring full-screen flickering / shimmering bug on reflective surfaces — pools of blood strobe in the sun, and metal armor pieces light up like cyberpunk-2077 chrome when the camera pans. Rebel Wolves has not yet acknowledged the bug in the official 1.0.2 or 1.0.3 patch notes. The community has identified a reproducible workaround that fixes 85-90% of the flicker, and a single-setting alternative that fixes most of the rest.

This page is a community-source roundup, not a studio-confirmed fix. Treat the workaround as a starting point and report your hardware + driver version on the official Steam Bug Reports sub-forum if the steps do not work for you.

What Causes The Flicker (Community Analysis)

The flickering is caused by lighting and shadow handling on the day-one Unreal Engine 5 build. The shimmer is most noticeable on reflective surfaces such as pools of blood and metal armor. The official launch build does not have Ray Reconstruction enabled, and the stock post-process stack stutters on reflective surfaces as a result.

The 600-series NVIDIA drivers do not emit Ray Reconstruction for Dawnwalker in the launch build, which is what triggers the visual artifact on most NVIDIA GPUs. AMD users report less flicker overall, but the bug still appears on some RDNA 3 cards.

The Reproducible Fix (4 Steps)

The community’s most-upvoted workaround, posted to r/DawnwalkerOfficial with 99 upvotes within the first 48 hours of launch:

  1. Roll back your NVIDIA driver to version 610.88. This is the last stable driver before the day-one driver broke post-process for Dawnwalker. Download the Studio Driver from NVIDIA’s driver archive, not GeForce Experience auto-update.
  2. Install the “Better Reflections and FIXED Ray Reconstruction” mod from Nexus Mods. The mod forces ray tracing, so pools of blood and metal armor pieces will reflect properly instead of strobing.
  3. In the NVIDIA App, set the DLSS override for Dawnwalker to “preset F” for ray reconstruction. This is the step most players miss. Preset F is what triggers the mod’s ray reconstruction to actually engage.
  4. Set Effects quality and Foliage quality to Low. Optional — only needed if any shimmer remains after the first three steps.

After these four steps, the original poster reported 85-90% of the flicker gone, with the remaining shimmer being too subtle to be distracting.

The Single-Setting Alternative

Several players discovered a much simpler fix that does not require driver rollback or mods:

  1. Launch Dawnwalker on the High preset (not Ultra).
  2. Once you are in-game, change the preset to Ultra via the graphics menu.
  3. Load your save.

The post-process chain initialises differently when started on High, and the flicker does not return when bumped back to Ultra afterwards. Multiple posters in the Steam thread confirmed this works after the driver-side workaround did not.

Why this works (community theory): The post-process pipeline runs once at the High preset’s lower mip bias, and the cached state survives the preset switch. This is not a real fix — it is a workaround that depends on the bug being a startup-time state issue, not a continuous rendering issue.

Caveats:

  • The workaround is hardware-dependent. Some users report it works, others do not.
  • Switching back to High and then Ultra again may re-trigger the flicker. Once you commit to Ultra, stay there.
  • Modders have not yet confirmed whether the workaround survives a clean driver reinstall.

Mod-Free Fallback

If neither the 4-step fix nor the single-setting alternative works on your hardware, the only mod-free fallback is:

  1. Drop Effects quality to Low. This is the only setting that reliably reduces the flicker without driver changes.
  2. Accept the visual loss. Low Effects reduces the quality of all post-process effects, not just the broken ones. The game still looks good, but the difference is noticeable on high-end monitors.
  3. Wait for a patch. The 1.0.4 or 1.0.5 patch may include a fix. Watch the official Rebel Wolves X account and the dawnwalkergame.com news page.

What This Fix Does Not Address

  • Flickering on non-reflective surfaces. If your flicker is happening on grass, trees, or character models (not just blood pools and armor), the cause is different. Check your TAA / DLSS settings first.
  • Audio crackling in cutscenes. That is a separate Linux / Steam Deck issue. See Launch Week Known Issues and Workarounds for the PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=120 workaround.
  • Gamepad cursor hijack. Also a separate issue. See the same launch-issues page.

Reporting This Bug To Rebel Wolves

If you try the fix and it does not work for your hardware, file a bug report on the Steam Community Bug Reports sub-forum. The community team forwards reproducible reports to engineering.

Information to include in your bug report:

  • GPU model + driver version (before and after rollback if you tried it)
  • The exact surfaces that flicker (blood pools, metal armor, water, all reflective)
  • Whether the single-setting alternative (start on High, switch to Ultra) helped
  • A short video clip showing the flicker (most useful — engineers can compare post-process state)
  • The exact time in-game when the flicker is worst (cutscenes, open world, indoor dungeons)
