Best Builds and Tier List — Swordmastery, Vampirism, Witchcraft, All-Rounder

Practical early-game build priorities and four complete build loadouts (All-Rounder, Swordmaster, Vampirism, Witchcraft) plus a Starter Build. S/A/B/C tier list for skills, combat styles, and early choices. Sources: the-blood-of-dawnwalker.wiki tier list (community), Game8 best builds (community-tier).

The Blood of Dawnwalker has three skill trees (Swordmastery, Vampirism, Witchcraft) that share one point pool, plus a fourth hybrid path for players who want flexibility. There is no single “best build” because the right answer depends on whether you want reliable day combat, aggressive night traversal, or a flexible middle. This page consolidates the early-game tier list and the four named builds into one decision tree.

The advice below is sourced from two community wiki hubs (the-blood-of-dawnwalker.wiki and Game8) plus the official build-planner tool. Each build is verified to work as of the 1.0.3 patch but builds do change with patches — the last update note on this page tracks against the version the wiki authors were working from.

TL;DR decision tree

If you wantStart withThen addWhen to specialize
Reliable day combat (sword + hex)Swordmastery basicsWitchcraft for hexAfter day 10-15
Aggressive night (vampire traversal)Vampirism ShapeshiftSwordmastery for clutch parriesAfter day 5 (you need Shapeshift early)
Flexible (any time, any fight)Swordmastery parry + Vampirism traversalWitchcraft Mercurial FervorAfter you understand the time system
Pure roleplay / “Coen as tragic vampire”Vampirism (high Corruption)Witchcraft (to keep humanity option)Never specialize fully

If you are new to the game and you have not decided yet, the recommended path is the Starter Build (Game8) which is a balanced Swordmastery + Vampirism + Witchcraft mix designed to keep you alive through the prologue and the first 5 in-game days. Once you hit day 5-7 and have unlocked a second tree investment, choose one of the four named builds below.

Tier list (early game)

The tier list is for the first 5-10 in-game days, before you have unlocked most of the skill tree. The tier list is community consensus, not a ranking from Rebel Wolves. As the community learns more, tier positions will shift.

S tier — top priority picks

Vampirism. The traversal and combat value of vampire form is exceptional. Wall-running, super-speed, and Shapeshift make both exploration and combat smoother. On a time-limited campaign, the seconds you save on traversal are real resources.

Swordmastery basics. The four-direction parry system is the backbone of the combat loop. Even players who plan to specialize in Witchcraft or Vampirism benefit from learning the parry timing first, because it teaches the rhythm that the whole combat system uses.

Defensive parry play (as a priority, not a skill). This is a meta priority rather than a single skill. Enemies telegraph their attacks; the combat system rewards reading the telegraph and committing to the parry rather than button-mashing. Players who build parry-first tend to clear tougher encounters with fewer resources spent.

A tier — strong and reliable

Witchcraft. Strong utility for daytime combat and for dialogue moments where Coen can use hex magic to question the dead for clues. Witchcraft abilities are gated by activation charges, not mana, so the constraint is “use them well” rather than “use them often.”

Directional parries. High-skill-reward picks for players who already know the parry timing and want to push it further. A well-timed directional parry is the difference between a regular hit and an execution finisher.

Movement and positioning tools. Mobility is never wasted in this game. Wall climbing, super-speed, and the open-world traversal are valuable regardless of your combat build.

B tier — situational but good

Direction-matching offense. Some abilities reward the player for attacking in the same direction the enemy is moving. This is a strong advanced tactic but not necessary for the prologue or the first Court Activity.

D-pad active abilities. The four-slot quick bar is enough for most fights. Filling all four slots with active abilities leaves you without a quickslot for consumables (healing food, alchemy).

Dialogue-based solutions. Many quests have non-combat paths. The dialogue options are well-written and the outcomes are meaningful, but they are scene-specific so they do not generalize into a “build.”

C tier — lower priority for early game

Highly specialized builds. Pure Witchcraft, pure Vampirism, or pure Swordmastery are all viable, but they punish mistakes more than the balanced approach does. The community does not have enough late-game data yet to rank these, so we treat them as flavor for the second playthrough rather than optimal for the first.

Narrow roleplay-first choices. Roleplay choices make for memorable moments but they are not the strongest “win condition” for the 30-day clock. If your goal is the family rescue, keep roleplay choices as second priority.

The four named builds

These are the four builds Game8 documents in detail. Each is a complete loadout, not just a priority order. Choose one once you have unlocked a second skill tree (around day 5-7 in a typical run).

Build 1 — All-Rounder

Concept: Jack of all trades, master of none. Coen maintains his humanity and uses vampire abilities only as a tool. Viable in both day and night fights.

Core skills: Swordmastery basics + Vampirism Shapeshift + Witchcraft Mercurial Fervor. The trio lets you parry in day, traverse at night, and heal on the go with hex magic.

When to pick: If you are unsure what playstyle you want, or if you are following a save/reload strategy to see all seven endings from one campaign (this build lets you reach any ending branch without respec).

Build 2 — Swordmaster

Concept: Coen uses the sword as his father taught him. Day-focused combat, with vampire abilities only as a clutch survival tool.

Core skills: Swordmastery full tree (Stinging Blade, Fate’s Favour, Vigour perks) + Vampirism Voracious Bite for emergency healing.

When to pick: If you prefer a clean, controlled combat style and you do most of your questing in the daytime. This build also performs well on Duelist difficulty because the parry window is the main survival tool.

Note from Game8: The Swordmaster build is the most accessible for new players because parry timing is forgiving at low difficulty and the skills are unlocked linearly through the Swordmastery tree.

Build 3 — Vampirism (full vampire)

Concept: Coen embraces the curse. Night-focused combat, with daytime spent in social / quest content while waiting for the sun to set.

Core skills: Vampirism full tree (Nourishing Blood, Razorsharp Claws) + Witchcraft Burning Blood for the human side. Shapeshift and Voracious Bite are mandatory.

When to pick: If you want a high-risk, high-reward build. The vampire abilities are powerful but Corruption accumulates — high Corruption unlocks stronger skills but locks out the most “human” ending paths.

Warning: The full Vampirism build is the most likely to lock you out of specific endings if Corruption exceeds 60% before the final quest. Plan your ending choice before fully committing to this build.

Build 4 — Witchcraft (full human)

Concept: Coen resists the curse. Day-focused combat, with Witchcraft hex magic and sword mastery. Night content is kept to a minimum, only the Shapeshift traversal.

Core skills: Witchcraft full tree (Burning Blood, Acrid Dust, hex projectile blast) + Swordmastery for parry backup. Mercurial Fervor is the key traversal skill — it lets you fast-travel day-side without ever needing vampire traversal.

When to pick: If you are aiming for one of the human-positive endings (Folk Hero, A Hero They Deserve) or if you want the “resist the curse” roleplay arc.

Note from Game8: Witchcraft is the strongest Day form for damage-over-time effects. Burn + bleed + slow is a consistent combo that works against most humanoid enemies, including vampire officers.

Starter Build (one-screen loadout)

If you want the simplest possible first-day loadout, Game8’s Starter Build fits in one screen:

Equipment: Any chestplate, chain leggings, cowhide strapped shoes, studded bracers, long cleaver, pendant of Vrakhiric swiftness, band of defence, any secondary ring. (The exact armor pieces do not matter for the first 3-5 days — use what you find in chests.)

Abilities (4 quick slots): Dirty Trick, Charge, Burning Blood, Voracious Bite, Mercurial Fervor, Shapeshift. (Pick any 4 of these 6 for your quickslot bar.)

Perks (priority order for the first 3-5 days): Stinging Blade → Fate’s Favour → Vigour → Witchcraft Mastery → Nourishing Blood → Razorsharp Claws.

Consumables: Food items that heal over time (onions, garlic, bread). Avoid alchemy consumables for the first few days because the fights are short enough that health-over-time food is enough.

Most important: Shapeshift and Mercurial Fervor are the priority unlocks. Initial traversal is slow without them, so the build planner will not feel right until you have both. Charge is also a strong pick because it has similar effectiveness to Burning Blood and can hit a second target if you swap enemies mid-fight.

Build planner reference

The thebloodofdawnwalkers.wiki build planner is the most detailed tool we have found so far. It uses a 4 day + 4 night slot grid because later slots open as you progress and because the two bars are separate kits (not eight powers you press at once). The planner also tracks how Corruption gating works — some Vampirism abilities are only available once you cross specific Corruption thresholds.

If you are following a single-build approach and you want to use the planner to plan your first 30 days, the typical workflow is:

  1. Lock in your Starter Build for the first 5 days.
  2. On day 5-7, choose one of the four named builds and spend skill points accordingly.
  3. Use the planner to check that you can still hit the ending you want with the build you have. If not, respec at a shrine (the only respec location) before day 15.

What is not yet confirmed

The community is still learning the late-game meta. Several questions are open as of this page’s last update:

  • Is Shapeshift truly the best traversal skill? Both Game8 and the planner wiki flag it as essential, but the late-game consequences (Corruption accumulation) are not yet fully mapped.
  • Can you respec at any time? The wiki says shrines are the only respec location. Community reports suggest some shrines charge a fee and others do not, but the exact mechanic is not fully documented.
  • Are any of the four named builds objectively better on Duelist difficulty? Anecdotal reports say Swordmaster and All-Rounder are more forgiving, but this is not yet confirmed across many runs.

The wiki will update this page when better late-game data is available.
